Healthcare in Mauritius: expatriating with peace of mind [Webinar]

29 October 2025

Mauritius, located in the heart of the Indian Ocean, continues to attract many expatriates thanks to its fine sandy beaches, lush nature and pleasant climate. This destination is particularly attractive to retirees, families and digital nomads. The island offers a diversity of landscapes and environments suited to different lifestyles:

  • East: A region of wild lands, ideal for nature lovers.
  • North and West: Tourist areas with a multitude of activities and services.
  • South: Ideal for job opportunities and quality schools.

We have produced a webinar on health in Mauritius. If you’re thinking of moving there, this webinar is for you. We covered several topics related to expatriate health in Mauritius: What are the options in terms of health insurance? How can I find the right insurance for my needs? How to get the best reimbursement? How does a consultation work? How much does it cost to be admitted to emergency following an accident?

Three experts were on hand to share their advice and answer your questions live: Jean-Christophe Pandolfi, CEO of Santexpat.fr, Tess d’Halluin, Accompagnement installation à Maurice and expatriate on the island for several years, and Dr Kamal Thacoor, doctor in Mauritius.

Various topics were addressed by the speakers during the webinar. The subject of CFE came up several times, for example concerning waiting periods. Jean-Christophe Pandolfi spoke on the subject:

“With CFE, you have an attachment to France, which avoids a waiting period when you return to France.”

Even so, it’s important to take out complementary health insurance to ensure that all your healthcare costs are covered. The CFE option is particularly attractive in terms of contributions, allowing you to remain attached to the French social security system. What’s more, CFE does not require a health form, so there are no exclusions in the event of pathologies. Nor is there any age limit, which may be of interest to people wishing to reside in France after retirement.

The importance of quality care and medical follow-up was also discussed. Dr. Kamal Thacoor was keen to reassure expatriates and future expatriates in Mauritius, saying:

“A large number of medical specialties are available in Mauritius. We are fortunate to have doctors and specialists with excellent reputations. Obstetrics and gynaecology is a very good example.”

In the event of an emergency requiring hospitalization, you’ll be well covered. What’s more, as Dr. Kamal Thacoor has already mentioned, the island boasts a large number of private clinics with state-of-the-art facilities. If you wish to seek private treatment during your stay in Mauritius, it is advisable to take out an international health insurance policy covering all consultation and treatment costs.

Medical consultations on the island are carried out by competent doctors, and health conditions are good. The range of care provided is extensive, so you’ll have peace of mind if you decide to make the island your main place of residence.

Finally, Tess d’Halluin shared with us her own experience as an expatriate in Mauritius and explained how she came to work with santexpat.fr:

“I’ve been an expatriate in Mauritius for 3 years now, and I’ve made it my mission to help people who want to move there themselves. An expatriation is prepared in advance and I’m delighted to be able to share my experience.”

Tess is used to traveling abroad on a regular basis and is well aware of the difficulties associated with healthcare. International health insurance covers both public and private healthcare. They give you a choice of practitioners, so you can remain confident during your stay abroad.

Expatriating to Mauritius offers many advantages, but it’s essential to be well prepared, especially when it comes to healthcare. Choosing the right health insurance, finding out about the local healthcare system and budgeting for medical expenses are key steps to a worry-free expatriation.

If you have any questions about health insurance for your expatriation, or about your medical treatment, don’t hesitate to contact an international health expert.
