The Covid-19 virus has changed many things in our lives, including the way we travel. After an almost total halt to international flights, life and travel have gradually resumed… under certain conditions and with a few restrictions. In addition to the basic precautions recommended to all travelers (wearing a mask, distancing oneself), some countries may require PCR tests, quarantine… And more and more are asking for a Covid travel insurance certificate, without which the traveler will not be accepted in the country. We take a closer look at this insurance offer.

What is Covid insurance?

A “Covid” insurance policy offers the usual guarantees of a travel insurance policy (coverage in the event of an emergency, accident or illness in a foreign country), plus additional guarantees linked to Covid. These new guarantees depend on the company and the services provided. For all that, it’s mainly a question of care and coverage:

  • healthcare costs in the event of contracting Covid,
  • in the event of hospitalization,
  • medical repatriation,

There may also be coverage for a visit to a loved one, hotel expenses in the event of quarantine, PCR or antigenic tests, cancellation and reimbursement of travel (notably air tickets) in the event of Covid contraction, etc. All these benefits are detailed in each insurance company’s offer. All these guarantees are detailed in each insurance company’s offer.

Please note: until now, epidemics were not covered by travel insurance. However, given the scale of the Covid-19 epidemic, it is now considered to be on a par with any other illness, and is therefore included in insurance contracts.

Why opt for travel insurance?

Even before the pandemic, some countries required travelers to take out travel insurance to enter their territory. Since then, the number of such countries has grown steadily. We’ve gone from 6 countries to 34 (at present).

For example, to enter Costa Rica, Thailand, Guatemala, Cuba, Brazil, the Seychelles, Mongolia and many other countries*, it is now necessary to present a certificate from your insurance company stating “Covid”. This certificate may also be requested in the language of the country concerned, and must generally set out the coverage and amounts (medical expenses covered and to what extent, repatriation coverage, amount of coverage in the event of quarantine, etc.). Finally, it must cover you for the entire duration of your stay.

The certificate is requested at border crossings or, by the airline, before you board the plane. It can thus condition your trip and the granting of your visa to stay in the country. Each country is different, and the list of countries changes daily. Before you travel, we strongly recommend that you check the country’s entry requirements.

Choosing your Covid insurance

As we said, before looking at insurance offers, the priority is to find out about the conditions for entering the country. Every country has different entry requirements, which change on a regular basis. So the first thing to do is to check with the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, France Diplomatie or the airlines, and then contact the insurance companies. Don’t hesitate to visit our website Santexpat.fr. Our team of experts can provide you with a list of the best offers on the market, depending on your situation, age and destination country. A word of clarification: the price of insurance varies according to the insured’s age, situation and/or country, but the price does not vary according to whether or not “Covid” is mentioned. Please note: as we said, not all countries require the same level of cover, and if there’s one thing we advise you to pay attention to, it’s the level of minimum cover required in each country. Cambodia, for example, requires a minimum of $50,000 cover for health expenses, while Chile requires a minimum of $30,000. If the certificate you have does not meet the country’s requirements, you should be aware that the country may also offer you to take out its own insurance (or require you to do so). So it’s important to be well informed when planning your trip.

Obtaining your “Covid” certificate

What you need to travel is your company’s attestation. Some countries require this document to be translated into their own language or, failing that, into English. It is therefore important to find out whether and how long it will take to obtain an attestation in another language. The “Covid” mention must appear on the attestation, as well as the amounts covered, as required by the country. It is then advisable to keep this attestation with you throughout your stay, especially if you are in transit to other regions, so that you can present it whenever necessary.
