How to get medical treatment abroad: EHIC and insurance

3 November 2025

Whether you’re planning a scheduled treatment or need unforeseen care during your trip abroad, it’s essential to understand the procedures for optimum coverage. Whether you need the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) in EU countries or travel insurance for other destinations, here’s everything you need to know to leave with peace of mind.

Scheduled treatment abroad

Scheduled care is any treatment or intervention planned in advance, and is generally the main reason for traveling abroad. The procedures and coverage vary depending on whether the treatment takes place in a European Union country or outside this zone.

In European Union countries

As a French citizen, you can receive medical treatment in EU countries, under the same conditions as local residents. However, prior authorization from your health insurance fund is often required. Once this authorization has been obtained, costs may be partially or fully reimbursed, depending on the rates in force in the country concerned.Key steps:

  1. Check whether the treatment is covered by your insurance in France and in the destination country.
  2. Obtain prior authorization from your health insurance fund.
  3. Contact a suitable healthcare facility (public or private) in the country concerned.

In case of doubt, each EU country has a national contact point to answer your questions.

Outside the European Union

For treatment scheduled in countries outside the EU, coverage by the French health insurance system is more complex. It is only possible in exceptional cases, notably for innovative treatments unavailable in France or Europe. You must submit a request to the national medical officer and obtain his or her approval before taking any steps.

Unexpected treatment abroad

Medical emergencies never happen overnight, especially when traveling. There are two main ways to protect yourself against unexpected expenses: the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) and supplementary health insurance.

The European Health Insurance Card: essential protection in Europe

The EHIC certifies your entitlement to French health insurance and gives you access to urgent care in the EU, EEA (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway) and Switzerland. It provides reimbursement according to the rates and conditions in force in the country you are visiting.Key points:

  • Free and valid: The card is free and valid for two years. Apply for it at least 15 days before your departure, via Ameli or your CPAM.
  • Conditions of reimbursement: The EHIC covers only unforeseen care deemed necessary. If expenses are advanced, keep your receipts to claim reimbursement in France.
  • Limitations: The EHIC does not cover scheduled treatment or repatriation costs.

Supplementary health insurance: extended cover

If you’re traveling outside Europe

, or wish to be reimbursed for treatment in private establishments, supplementary health insurance is essential. These policies provide :

  • Coverage in public and private hospitals worldwide.
  • Coverage of costly medical expenses, including hospitalization.
  • Management of repatriation and other incidents (lost luggage, flight cancellation, etc.).

What treatment is covered by the EHIC?

The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)

covers only care considered necessary and unforeseen during a stay of less than three months, such as vacations, cultural visits, studies, internships, school trips or work-related travel. It does not apply to private care or medical treatment that could have been scheduled in France. Reimbursements are calculated according to the rates in force in the country where the treatment is provided, and it may be necessary to top up the payment. To benefit from more extensive coverage, particularly for access to private establishments or optimal reimbursement, it is strongly recommended to take out supplementary health insurance. The latter offers extended coverage, operates worldwide and generally covers other unforeseen events, such as repatriation, lost luggage or flight cancellation.

Why take out additional travel health insurance?

Although the EHIC is useful for travel within Europe, it doesn’t cover everything. Medical treatment abroad, especially outside the EU, can be a major expense. Private health insurance provides better coverage, faster reimbursements and care tailored to your needs, whether you’re on a short stay, expatriation or business trip.
